Part of the allure is the detective work behind putting the pieces of a puzzle together to make that story come to life. This watch is no different - a cartier santos with original box and papers. Only this time there is a catch. The papers are blank. No individual serial number or date of purchase. Just a small stamp in the bottom left hand corner that reads \"-Cartier- Paris London New York\" and at the very bottom you see \"Narita South Wing Terminal 1\"\u003cbr\u003e     So off I was set out and determined to uncover this mystery that lays before me on my desk. A full set Cartier Santos with box and papers. Papers that were a blank slate save for a little stamp in the corner. After a little digging I found that Narita South Wing was an airport in Japan where there just so happen to be a Cartier boutique at - you guessed it - terminal 1. \u003cbr\u003e     The next part of the mystery that peaked my interest was the two small stamps below Cartier - hallmarks of what appeared to be a small owl with the number 75 on their chest. After some digging I came to learn that hallmark signifies a foreign made gold case that was imported into France, specifically Paris. That coincides nicely with the stamp mentioned earlier as Paris is one of the major 3 cities listed.  \u003cbr\u003e     So it appears that the case, and perhaps the entire watch, was assembled in Switzerland before being imported into France before eventually making its way to the Cartier boutique in Narita, Japan to be bought by its original owner. The Japanese have introduced a new watch technology to the world: Quartz. Not only did quartz prove to be more accurate, it was easier to manufacturer. Its dearth of craftmanship and absence of hand crafted quality enabled watches to be produced at scale for a fraction of the price. This is where things became interesting. The Swiss watch industry was now at a crossroads. Retrospectively analyzing the decisions of various companies reveals two schools of thinking or strategies rather. One the one side you had brands doubling down. Think Rolex, Patek, Vacheron. Thereby potentiating their status and position in the Luxury segment. Conversely, you had others who decided to play ball. Think Omega amongst others. This decision damaged the reputation of the later companies for decades. They were no longer viewed as a luxury good and worse they couldn't make watches quartz cheap enough at scale to compete with the Japanese. Regardless of which camp a company resided in one thing was apparent: the Swiss watch industry had to get creative in order to survive. Enter Gerald Genta. Up until this point in time a majority of mechanical wrist watches were encased in precious metals. Save for the great wars, materials like steel were not heavily used especially amongst the big three. Then Genta rocked the world and his creative designs would reshape an entire industry forever. He designed the Royal Oak and Nautilus in quick succession. One key feature in his design is an all steel case with an integrated steel bracelet. The design was then marketed as a industrialized and robust. The first steel product perceived as a luxury good.  You see, the influencers of the late 70's and 80's were more relaxed than there earlier generation counterparts. They weren't as stuffy but still had a desire to show their wealth. While not instantaneously a hit, these revolutionary designs gained feet and other companies had to catch up. The Santos Carree references 2960 (Steel) and 2961 (two-tone) was Cartiers answer to Gentas designs. You can see the influence yet both are still unapologetically Cartier. As the world was about to enter its first major global war the practicality of the wrist watch was going to become abundantly evident. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e     In 1973 the Santos Dumont was relaunched as part of the Louis Cartier Collection beginning with the references 78097 and 78098. The 96054 came later and received a number of upgrades. To start, the ETA based Cartier 78 was swapped out for a Frederick Piguet 21. The movement is an improvement on a number of fronts and boasts a higher standard of finishing. Its a very thin movement leading to Cartier watches equipped with them to be referred to as \"Extra Plate\" or \"Extra Flat.\" \u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e     The 96054 was limited to approximately 1600 pieces. It is lovely watch and this particular 96054 is a fantastic example. It is has an extremely sharp case and is a very early example almost cracking the first 100 ever made. From 1919 to 1969 Cartier Paris produced less than 6,000 total TANKS. Not normales - all tanks. That's right. Cartier produced \u0026gt;50% normales in a 10 year span than Cartier Paris produced total tanks in just over 5 decades. What about Cartier New York you say? Typically, if you are afforded the opportunity to see an old Cartier dial removed from the case you will observe cracking around the edge of the dial near the case screws. Most often the outside of the dial that is not visible when encased will be chipped. Remarkably, this dial exhibits no chipping. Additionally, it presents with the classic pitting in the painted black numerals and chemin de fer. This is common from Cartier dials of this era and is to be expected.
