The cal. 550 is in the same family as the chronometer rated 551. It is hypothesized that 17 jewel variants were destined for the U.S market as the United States had heavy tariffs in place for movements greater than 17j; though, to be clear, it's not certain that is the case in this instance. The watch was timed over a 24hr period and compared with atomic EST. In that time period the watch lost 12 seconds. On the outside of the dial you will see numbers from 1000 to 60 which is called a tachymeter scale. Back in the day, a tachymeter scale was used to measure how fast things were going. For example, lets say you were taking a car for a lap around a 1 mile track. When you start your lap you would start the chronograph function by pushing the button at 2 oclock. When you finished your lap you would then stop the chronograph using the same 2 oclock pusher. Whatever number the chronograph hand would fall on the tachymeter scale would represent your average speed for that lap.
