Omega Geneve - Cursive
Omega Geneve - Cursive
In the mid 1940s, Omegas in house 30mm movements had considerable success in the Geneva Observatory Trials. The Geneve line was introduced in 1953 as a homage to Omega success at those trials and specifically the workshops in Geneva where the best regulators were working. At the time, the "Geneve" line was second only to the Constellation line in Omega's stable of dress watches. The two lines differed in that the Constellation line was more focused on using automatic chronometer certified movements whereas the Geneve line used high grade 30mm manual movements, although there were exceptions made in both lines. The Genève was at the top of Omega's high-production, manual-wind model line from its inception until around 1960. Over time, the Geneve was transitioned into a lower end model in Omega's lineup, but represented up to 60% of the company's sales during the quartz crisis in the 1970s. This transitioned to cheapened Geneve model was achieved to less intricate cases that were easier to manufacturer, cheaper movements and dials that were more simple. Gone was those beautiful and magnificent two tone dials and faceted lugged cases of old.
So the question then becomes this: how can a novice differentiate between the earlier, more collectable Geneve models and those of lesser quality produced during subsequent decades? Well, other than the movement, the answer is actually pretty straightforward: the script of Geneve. Before the line was cheapened as Omegas strategy to combat the quartz crisis, the Geneve text was written in cursive.
